Bridge your employability gap
According to NASSCOM-McKinsey study, India could face a shortfall of 500,000 IT professionals by 2010. This is not because of ‘demand-supply gap’ but due to wide ‘employability gap’ created every year by 70%-80% of Engineering graduates pass out who are considered ‘unemployable’ (not skillful) by the growing IT and ITES sectors. Even the 20%-30% of graduates who take up campus placement go through rigorous 3 – 6 month training program to develop the skills required by the industry. As a result companies spend considerable amount of time and resources on their training to develop skilled resources. But if the trend continues this could lead to a situation where companies might start scouting for alternative location (China being the strong contender) where they can have abundant access to quality manpower.
To bridge this widening skilled resource gap many industry-academia partnership programs were started, to name a few:
- 'Campus Connect' program started by Infosys
- Wipro had started a program called the Wipro Academy of Software Excellence(WASE), in association with BITS (Pilani)
- Zensar Technologies has opened Zensar Center for Business Innovation (ZCBI) to conduct One Year Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in Business Transformation
- TCS has tied-up with SASTRA University, Tamil Nadu to provide MCA program for TCS Ignite trainees who join TCS after B.Sc degree
But, these partnership programs benefit only small section of students due to limited in-take for each batch. Thus, Industry-Academia partnership programs does not benefit the masses and to bridge the skill gap shortage the onus lies on the students themselves who should take up Industry accepted Certification courses that are on par with Industry requirements such as,
- Microsoft Certifications
- Sun Certifications
- Oracle Certifications
- Cisco Certifications
- PMI Certified Associate Project Manager (CAPM)
- ITIL Foundation Course
- International Institute of Business Analysis
The role of Industry should be to give due weightage to such certifications during the selection process and academia should facilitate, guide and encourage students to take such certification programs. Further information and details of the above certification course are available in the Internet and most of these tests are conducted online through authorized centers. So instead of passing the buck on the college course curriculum and faculties make your self ready for the job battle.
